Local Film Producer Brings America's #1 Film School To Detroit

I love reading about strides communities and everday people make in the industry of Film.

That’s why I may have gotten a little too excited when I read this press release below. Oh Well – My intrigue leads me to share it anyhow in case you are near Detroit or have the ability to travel there.

Local Film Producer Brings America's #1 Film School To Detroit

Small businesses not only help sustain the US economy, they represent 99.7% of all employer firms. The same holds true for Michigan's newest industry, film. Thus, in order to sustain the industry, it requires more Michigan-based independent producers (Joe the Producer).

It will take three steps before Joe the Producer can help sustain a filming economic base:
1) Train more Joe the Producers
2) Train screenwriters how to write "HI-CONCEPT" movies that will make money
3) Provide a means to fund Joe the Producer's film projects.

The first step takes place this month. On July 25-26, Delta Quadrant Entertainment LLC and FilminDetroit.com bring America's #1 Film School to the MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit.

"Everything you need to know about filmmaking can be learned in two to three days." - Orson Welles

Dov SS Simens, a former Green Beret and Vietnam veteran teaches this intensive 2-Day Film School -- July 25-26 (8:30AM-6PM).

He boils down four years of training into only two days, with as many bathroom breaks. Some of Simens's former students are Quentin Tarantino, Spike Lee, Christopher Nolan (the Dark Knight), Emo Phillips (Meet the Parents) and Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire). Over the last ten years, his students have grossed over $8 billion dollars in the film industry.

Delta Quadrant Entertainment LLC and beneath the underdog Films have awarded 15 scholarships (valued at $395) to students at Covenant House Life Skills School in Detroit, a second-chance high school.

They are also in the process of duplicating this with Detroit Public High Schools. The youth are our future, no matter where they come from.

Delta Quadrant Entertainment LLC and beneath the underdog Films requested that the No Worker Left Behind Program pay for the tuition of "displaced auto workers" that want to attend. The request was denied.

Therefore, Delta Quadrant Entertainment and beneath the underdog Films have initiated their own, No Worker Left Behind Program.

The first 100 displaced autoworkers to pre-register (at a different location - to be determined) will be granted entry for only $50. After that, they will be discounted by $100.

The only thing better than seeing the next great film producer come out of Michigan, is to see that producer stay in Michigan.

Look Ma – My Made Up Word’s in The Dictionary!

No really – how often do you truly hear of new words going into a dictionary – and I don’t mean the self-published slang dictionaries that keep coming and going through some sort of fly by night little ditty.

This year, Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary added a new word – a word we are truly familiar with – thanks to economic “crisis” reporting and haute little mags promoting local community and family togetherness: “STAYCATION”

I love it. It’s fun to say – and easy to imagine. And now it’s in the official dictionary!

"Our language evolves in many ways," said John Morse, president and publisher of Merriam-Webster Inc. "As we've seen from our Open Dictionary feature on Merriam-Webster.com, people enjoy blending existing words, like combining 'stay' and 'vacation' to make staycation. Staycation is a good example of a word meeting a need and establishing itself in the language very quickly. Our earliest record of use is from 2005, but it seems to have exploded into popular use in 2007."

You ever hear the phrase – “keep your friends close and your enemies even closer”?
"Another example of this kind of creative wordplay from this year's list," said Morse, "is frenemy: one who pretends to be a friend but is actually an enemy. But, in addition to these 'portmanteau words,' we have added new words from more predictable categories, like science, health, technology, and popular culture, which have also seen widespread use across a variety of publications."

Many of the new words reflect the importance of the environment (carbon footprint, green- collar), government activities (earmark, waterboarding), health and medicine (cardioprotective, locavore, naproxen, neuroprotective), pop culture (docusoap, fan fiction, flash mob, reggaeton), and online activities (sock puppet, vlog, webisode). Other words added include haram, memory foam, missalette, and zip line.

wonder what this means for the spelling bee word list?

Partying Under the St. Louis Lights for an All-Star Game?

It’s a pretty big rounder of events for sports enthusiasts traveling to the Show Me State! That’s right – I said it! I know it – and We’re talking about the All-Star Baseball Festivities happening in St. Louis, Missouri.

The City’s Mayor says, "St. Louis is proud to be the home of America's best baseball fans, and this year's All-Star Game is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our love for the sport," said Slay. "An important part of that includes promoting responsible behavior and ensuring a great experience for fans. We thank Anheuser-Busch and its partners in the community for their efforts to promote a fun, yet safe time."

So, why is a politician thanking a major beer brewer? Well, apparently, Anheuser-Busch has partnered with Major League Baseball, the St. Louis Cardinals, Sport service and TEAM Coalition to implement the Budweiser Good Sport program at events being held at Busch Stadium. Good Sport is a comprehensive action plan designed to promote a positive environment by reminding fans to act responsibly, respect the rights of others and use a designated driver. Participants who sign up to be the designated driver for their group as part of the Good Sport program receive a free soda or non-alcohol O'Doul's and promotional beads.

The press release says “Consumers” (– which makes me wonder if you have to prove you were drinking an Anheuser-Busch product - )interested in receiving a ride for both themselves and their vehicles can call ScooterGuy, which will be stationed outside of Busch Stadium and at area bars and restaurants.
When ScooterGuy is notified that someone needs a safe ride home, a ScooterGuy representative rides a foldable scooter to meet the customer at his/her vehicle, places the scooter in the trunk of the vehicle and then drives that person home. After delivering the customer to his/her residence, the ScooterGuy representative returns to area bars to help the next patron.

OH YES, the press release on this little ditty also lists the phone number – in case your traveling to the game and need to program it in your cell – “ScooterGuy's number in St. Louis is 314-255-1800. The rate is 35 miles for $45.”

Benefits of Chasing A Little White Ball

Found this interesting -- and a great argument for my love a this game! All of the following information was found on a press release promoting a website about playing golf!

Health and fitness experts advocate taking 10,000 steps per day, the equivalent of five miles. Walking a 9-hole course enables a golfer to take approximately half the recommended daily steps. Walking the course also enables golfers to burn calories.

A player can burn around 2,900 calories by walking 36 holes a week, or two 18-hole rounds. A visit to the driving range can burn 200 calories per hour. According to a study conducted at the Rose Center for Health and Sports Sciences, burning 2,500 calories a week showed an improvement in overall health and a lower risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Even riding in a golf cart for 9 holes will burn around 400 calories, help oxygenate the body, improve posture and renew your spirit.
To further reap the benefits of the game, David Donatucci, fitness director for the PGA of America, recommends including golf-specific strength and flexibility exercises with driving range and course time. "Training your body to use the right muscle groups will increase your chances of avoiding injuries, improving your swing and saving strokes." Including weight-bearing exercise in a fitness regime also helps strengthen bones and creates lean muscle mass.
Also, remember:

1. Don't stress about how well you play. Keeping the focus on having fun
and enjoying the outdoors will provide an endorphin release, which
leads to improved mental and emotional health.
2. Fuel up for your game with a healthy diet. Bring nutritious snacks such
as dried fruit or nuts to help keep you energized. Stay hydrated.
